Bathroom sink - Landlord Forum thread 326017

Bathroom sink by anonymous (NYC) on October 20, 2014 @20:04

I want to remove a bathroom sink. The sink is old and was place in aprox. 1975. I ask the land lord to come get it but he refuses. Will I be responsible for the sink when I move. I will leave the one I planning on purchasing when I move.

You should not make any alterations to your rental home without your landlord's permission.

Why would you want to pay to purchase a sink and have it installed when this is not your home? You're right, you cannot take it with you.

My advice is to leave the old sink, pay your rent, and don't make any improvements to the property.

If you really want to replace the old sink, ask the landlord to approve the new sink in writing. Then, once he does approve it, get rid of the old sink yourself if he won't pick it up. Habitat for Humanity or one of the other charities probably will take the old sink and will pick it up for you. Or post it on Craigslist to give away for free and let someone haul it away.

I once lived in a little slum cottage. It was when my husband was called up to serve in the Iraq war and we were paying a mortgage on a home we owned back in WV and couldn't afford much in rent in the high priced Tacoma WA area where we were stationed. We did a bit of fixing up his cottage with stuff we got for free off Craigslist and Freecycle. We replaced his stove that was about 30 years old and only had three working burners with a 10 year old one that worked perfectly that we got for free. We added a badly needed storage shed (the house was less than 400 sq. ft and had one tiny closet) we got for free. We got a portable dishwasher for free--we took that with us when we left. I did a lot of landscaping with plants I got either on clearance or for free. The place looked really cute by the time we left a year and a half later, and we got our entire deposit back and the property manager had a list of people who wanted to rent it, just based on how it looked from the outside.

So I do understand why you might want to replace a sink. But get permission in writing and leave the new sink behind when you move. If the landlord doesn't want to write up the permission for you, write it up for him and just have him sign it. You'll be OK as long as he agrees and you have it in writing.

You might look into the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and check out Craigslist before you pay full retail for a new sink. Only you know if it's worth it to you to pay full price for a new one. But if you just want something nicer, I suggest checking to see if you can find a newer (but used) one for cheap.

The issue isn't just the bathroom sink. It is the pipes going to it. So the landlord may be hesitant to allow someone to do this job that is not well versed in the pipes and connections going to the sink. You need to have permission from the landlord. Yes, you would be responsible for any leak under a sink that you have replaced......be careful with this project.

Read your lease. It probably prohibits this.
