The issue isn't just the bathroom sink. It is the pipes going to it. So the landlord may be hesitant to allow someone to do this job that is not well versed in the pipes and connections going to the sink. You need to have permission from the landlord. Yes, you would be responsible for any leak under a sink that you have replaced......be careful with this project.

It's probably prohibited in your lease, but I agree with Kim. I would ask the landlord. When we were tenants years ago I asked for premission to paint the ceiling as the previous tenants were smokers and the ceiling had really darkened - terrible. It was a win for both of us. Each situation is different. And, asking can't hurt.
