real/legitimate/successful small business owners can prove their income and know what and how to do so. I have been self employed for many, many years and I know exactly what is required.

Nicole. Thanks. The statements you maintain as a small business owner--is this the 'Income Statement' as we learn in basic Financial Accounting? Something like QuickBooks does produce the Income Statement and more but am I correct if I were to ask: "I'll need to take a look at your Income Statement for 2013 and 2014? As a small business do you keep any other of the three basic financial reports?
