We destroy all applications once a rental decision has been made to protect private information of the applicants.

That is a terrible policy. A business should never destroy documents immediately after any kind of business decision is made, for MANY reasons. If you are worried about security, then you need to take steps to secure the information, either via a locked secured file cabinet, or some form of electronic storage.

Either way, start keeping your documents.
