As several people below suggested, you need an attorney. I would look for an attorney that has a very good investigator. These people may be "pros".
10K for one statement in passing. Sounds like professional cons.
4 kids in one bedroom. Almost sounds like a set-up

Next time make sure you qualify your response...
-That the bedrooms especially the second bedroom is very small. But that you would love to show them the property....

These people may be "pros" well yes, the Michigan Dept of Civil Rights are pros in discrimination cases.
Who or what would an investigator investigate, the Michigan Dept of Civil Rights, or the complainants and for what reason. Its the State of Michigan vs the landlord.

They would not have requested information from the landlord if they felt that there was no violation.
House was two bedroom with finish attic space.

Make sure the "renters" don't have other suits pending against other LL for similar offenses.

    >They would not have requested information from the landlord if they felt that there was no violation.<
As a government agency they must check out ALL complaints. Even if they think it is bogus. They still have to inquire.

    >House was two bedroom with finish attic space.<
Finished attic space isn't a bedroom. It could be against the law for someone to use the attic space for sleeping. Besides, most LL have it in their lease that a space can only be used as intended.
