Aggressive Breed List? - Landlord Forum thread 328580

Aggressive Breed List? by Anonymous on December 11, 2014 @09:50

What list do you use to determine Aggressive Breed Dogs? Shaun?

Does anyone you have an official current list of aggressive breed/not allowed dogs? I have an older list that someone posted on the LPA forum back in 2008. But it does not list the source. How do you determine if the dog is not allowed/aggressive? I have some people interested in my SFH but they have a Boxer. Boxer shows on my aggressive breed list.

Please, what list do you use? I do not want to bother my insurance company about this issue if possible.

Your insurances determination of aggressive breeds is the only one that matters. Why not 'bother' them? What reason would you not ask them that question?

Poster above is correct -- the only list that matters is the one your insurance company has. For instance, my insurance company doesn't have a list of dangerous/aggressive breeds at all! We're covered for anything until the first bite. And it's possible that changes per company and per state. But I wouldn't know that unless I asked the insurance company.

..."I do not want to bother my insurance company about this issue if possible."

Why?

The "list" for the most part is the standard list. Pits, Rotts, Mutes, Dobies, Chows, etc...

And of course you know "Everyone's Blue Nose is as gentle as a lamb." And "My Chow is as friendly as they come". I put those type of statements with "My dog doesn't dig."

What has really worked for me, has been limiting pet weight. Most of the sited/listed "aggressive breeds" happen to be over 35lbs.
And for whatever reason Size / Weight doesn't seem to trigger a defensive reaction.

My standard reply...
"I'm so sorry. We've had terrible problems with large dogs in the past. Their paws are bigger, their mouths are bigger, and unfortunately their bladders are bigger. Which seems to cause a lot of damage."

Be aware that many who have Pit Bulls will try to pass them off as Boxers. Always get a photo of the dog with the owner in the picture. Or better have them bring the dog over and you take the photo.

The use of such lists is not acceptable everywhere. Michigan and Pennsylvania have restricted the use of dog breed profiling by insurance companies. Ten other states have pending legislation that would similarly prohibit companies to deny insurance to someone based only on the breed of dog owned by their household.

A landlord should always check their local and State laws, even if an Insurance company permitted a Dangerous Dog under the policy, the landlord could run a foul of other laws and ordinances that prohibit such dangerous dogs.

Here is a website that list State and local laws that could affect the landlord.
