If your boyfriend wants to shack up at your place, he needs to get on the lease and pay his portion of the rent. Otherwise, you need to spend an equal number of nights at his place per week. Why wouldn't you?

This is not a great answer. For most leases, guests are allowed to visit for up to 14 days. However, there are seldom any good guidelines for what period of time is acceptable for the 14 days. My assumption is that since the cycle for most leases are monthly, that your boyfriend could not visit for more than 14 days each month.

However, keeping a good relationship with your landlord generally makes life easier, so you should try to work with him as best you can. Maybe you and your boyfriend can go meet your landlord and show him that your boyfriend does have his own place (bring a copy of the lease or mortgage).

I would not agree about 14 days.
When your rental is in a private home, you may be subject to certain rules you must abide by. In my rentals, we allow visitors no longer than 4 days.
Despite what many tenants and even landlords think, it is not like you are renting from a professional licensed real estate management co. which must follow certain guidelines. Private ownwers can do what they want in their homes.

If it were your home, how would you feel if your single tenant had a BF mooching off your utilities and living there rent free?

There was no talk about the tenant living in a multi-unit property where the owner was living in the same building.

While different areas have different guidelines pertaining to visitors, my comment about the 14-day time frame is what is used in most areas from what I have experienced.

You are correct that there are exceptions when it comes to landlords that live int he same building as the tenant, but the landlord still cannot just make up an arbitrary amount of time that a visitor can 'visit'. He should refer to the guidelines for his area and situation and base his course of action upon that.
