student loans on report - Landlord Forum thread 332508

student loans on report by J (FL) on March 23, 2015 @11:02

Lately I have been getting applicants with lots and lots of student loan debt, some of it in collections, and some with very large amounts in collections...I don't know much about student loans, except I know they are not dischargeable in a BK.

How do you evaluate these loans on a report when making a decision on whether to accept an applicant?

Thanks.

Same weight as any other debt. Student loans in collection indicates poor planning and a low sense of responsibility on the borrower's part. If not in collection, it is just another debt and evidence of prospect's payment history, good or bad.

It's just so stupid to default on student loans, because they will work with you if you just call them up. And the classes that are required for students to go to before they can get a loan - every single quarter or semester - drill it over and over, that if you get into trouble just call them!

I went back to school early 2000's in my 40's, and so I know there is no excuse for a student loan to go to default.

That said, if they're really young and everything else looks good, I might consider them. But, if they also didn't pay their cell phone bill and it also went to collection after receiving notice after notice....

run the other way. This is someone who can afford to make their payments, but decide they just have to have that new pair of shoes instead. Which will be what you hear every month, too.

Someone who fails to pay their obligations is someone you do not want to rent to.

Plus...when they don't pay you...you won't even be first in line to get a garnishment. Government is always first.

Really, you know these people do not honor their debts....do you even want to get into that line?
