Unfortunately, it doesn't matter - Landlord Forum thread 332562

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter by CCRider (CA) on March 24, 2015 @17:54

I think your cause is noble. But, not a winning one.

Any dog that might be confused with a pit bull, is a dog that will not be wanted by a landlord. That's all that really matters.

Someone could always get a doggie DNA test to prove it does not have any restricted breed DNA.

But, unfortunately, many landlords that do still accept dogs, are simply side-stepping the issue altogether by just saying dogs must be 25 pounds or less.

And you'll also have to lobby insurance companies to insure pit bulls and pit bull mixes.

Good luck to you.

Well, I appreciate your honest response.

We ( as you may have guessed) have two APBTs. They are really loving dogs, although we did our due diligence.
They are well-socialized, obedient, and very friendly low key dogs.

However, I do understand your position. Especially, when not everyone is a responsible owner.

In case it mattered to anyone, State Farm insures APBTs, as that is who we have.

Thank you for your input!

I have a pretty pitty too -- an 70 lb. American Staffordshire Terrier. Very sweet dog who loves people -- and can catch a kill a varmint in seconds flat (an especially good mouser)! Loves my cats, too! And in my state, State Farm does not have a so-called dangerous dog list nor do they bar insurance based on any breed; they base insurance on the status of the dog -- if it has a bite history or has been tagged as aggressive by the city/county (meaning it has acted in a manner that required city/county involvement, such as biting), it will affect insurance coverage.

Landlords are doing what is necessary for their neighbors consideration and to protect their property. Limiting pets to under 30 pounds is not "sidestepping" the issue; it limits the extra wear, tear, risk and load placed on a SFH by an 85 pound pitt bull or rotweiler. I am willing to considered any mixed breed but if it weighs 90 pounds you are going to pay 3X my non-refundable pet fee. That stops these tenants and sends them to a landlord that doesn't know any better, one that doesn't run credit checks, criminal checks, etc.
