Sure you could ask them and make it a matter of updating info, rather than something the tenant may construe as somewhat questionable (although it really is not questionable).

If you have their employment info already on file, you may just want to give a call to HR and ask if the person is still currently employed full time.

Definitely do an inspection before you permit a lease renewal for a year, and then things can be addressed as necessary relative to fixes and repairs and you'll have an idea of how clean your tenant is...and if there are any unauthorized pets or people also living there.
