Dirt is damage. The carpet is now damaged, yes you can charge him to clean it. If it does not come clean you can charge him to replace it minus the depreciation.

There is normal wear and tear that is to be expected. Any other mess he left beyond normal wear and tear you may also charge to clean up.

You need to disclose your state. Different states have different rules. In my state the security deposit can also cover unpaid rent. Depending on what type of lease and your state, you may be able to charge him for not giving 30 days notice. If your lease is worded that it rolls over to a month to month after the end then it is likely that you can charge for the month without notice, but that would again depend on the lease term and your state.
