Legally, you are allowed to be in the apartment until the very last day that your lease indicates is the end of the term. Both tenant and LL have to abide by that date unless you agree to the LL's request.

Your LL asking you to pay for half of May is unusual, unless you did not provide them with timely notice of your non-renewal. Your state probably has a law that sets the minimum about of time you must give your LL between your notice of leaving and the date you leave. Check in the section to the right for your state's requirements.
