Call or visit the bank(s) the check(s) are written on one last time to see if they will clear--do not deposit these bad checks to your account if you will be charged a fee when they are returned NSF! If they will not cash or the banks are not local for you to visit, call your local District Attorney's office to see if they have a bad check collection process, and ask whether you need to deposit the check so it returns NSF in order to make use of the DAs process. In my county, I can submit the bad checks, along with a form provided by the DA, to the DA's office and the DA will contact the perp to see if he's willing to enter into a payment plan with the DA. If so, I get payments until the bad check and any associated fees are PIF; if no, the DA will file criminal charges (misdemeanor or felony, depending on the amount of the check) against the perp. At that point, you can check your local victim's compensation fund or you can write off the bad debt for IRS purposes. And next time, don't wait so long -- checks typically aren't good after 180 days or thereabouts. Good luck.
