You may want to contact the co-signers (parents) and give them a heads up that the A/C units have to remain when their children move out and tell them why (IF your lease says that things affixed to the property become the property of the owner).

A lot of the time, people (college students) just sign the lease and really don't remember or pay attention to the terms, and this might be the case here. College kids can be messy and not take care of things--after all, they don't own it and their parents will get them off the hook for anything owed. Their folks probably made the A/C purchase.
