No matter how you cut it the hot water is inadequate. Whatever kind of water heater the tenant has you can bet the landlord does not have the same kind at his house. Why? Because it is inadequate.

Hot water is provided, it just isn't unlimited and that is a good thing. You don't put an 80 gallon water heater in an efficiency apartment and you don't put a 20 gallon one ina 3 bedroom 2 bath... We don't have the proper info to give a full appraisal of the situation. You know that if it was a giant electric water heater the tenant would be complaining that it cost too much to keep such a large amount of water hot all the time.

My advice is to ask the LL about it, get a high efficiency low flow showerhead, and don't shower after doing the dishes.

I have lived in numerous apartments, one a studio, and I have NEVER had a problem like this. I understand that hot water shouldn't last forever, but is TEN MINUTES really asking so much? And is being able to do an entire sink full of dishes really such a luxury? I am a woman. I think we all must know that women take long showers! I am simply asking for ten minutes! Is that really so bad?

No, five or ten minutes of hot water is not an excessive expectation. Every landlord here has that much hot water and more. If they do not, I would ask why. Hot water is required by law. Call your local health department to see what their guideline is.

hmm, it went from "literally five minutes" in the original post, to "ten minutes" in this post

keep in mind, you get what you pay for
