AC units are sized based upon the size of the area they are to cool minus loss due to number of windows and doors. Leaving windows open causes the AC to work harder because of the excessive hot air entering. This can cause lead to freezing of the coils from it running too long and early failure of the AC. AC's are designed for a closed environment.
