You as the tenant are wasting energy but the unit may actually last longer due to less cycles. The worst thing you can do to a motor (compressor incuded) is to start it. What your are doing is increasing the cooling load which will cause the system to run more constantly with less start ups and stops.
In other words, in other words the landlord should not worry about it. The fresh air exchange is good for your health so you can continue to work to pay the higher utility bills and your future rent increase.
