The first step in your landlord proving that he thinks you are abusing his equipment would be to notify you of his belief in that fact.

If I was your landlord I would write you a letter noting that by leaving one or more of your windows open while running the AC you may be causing excess wear and tear to the system. I would further state that if the system failed prematurely I would consider you to be financially responsible for its repair. I would probably suggest/ask/tell you to
take appropriate action to protect the AC unit but I would not take it upon myself to close a window or turn off the AC.

Now the final decision is yours but if the system fails and the landlord takes you to court he has proof that you knowingly were running the AC in a manor that may have caused damage beyond normal wear and tear.
