Ugh, seriously, that's the mess I cleaned up at the house I'm currently living in. I had the house (built in 1973) centrally wired for coax so things wouldn't be drilled into the outside of the house.

What's your experience now? Have you been able to have cable internet and DirecTV run through the same coax cable or do you need two sets of cable? One set for cable TV and/or internet and one set for DirecTV?

You can use just one cable by having the installer used a diplexer or a multi switch, which allows using just one cable. If your house was built in 1973, you could have the old RG56 cable instead of the RG6 which is common to install now. Direct Tv has a permission form which should have been given and filled out by the tenant stating that permission was granted. What you have experience was most likly a sub contractor installation where the idea is to do the most installs per day and not worry about exposed wiring and holes. This installer has a low voltage license which you could complain to the State licensing board. I have several properties that are set up this way with the multi switch and dipelexers that handle satelite, cable and over the air antenna. The rentals are prewired and all the installer has to do is make the connection at the multi switch port (located outside the rental)

Yes they new cable hooked into the central line we installed. There is a coax to every room in the house and no need to drill. The last installer - when instructed - hooked the dish right up to it and everything works like a charm.
