Jannie, we started putting these sink drain screens in several years and have great results in eliminating such problems. Check out 'Semper Screen';

I buy those types of strainers at HD, the problem is they rust over time and leave a rust stain that can't be removed.

    I too use the semper drain screens, those at HD are not the stainless steel ones. I have never had a problem with rust, maybe you have purchased knockoffs sold by HD.

      I have been using SemperScreens in my building for about a year now... They have worked great and no clogs or rust. I also noticed my water bill has gone down after removing the garbage disposals because the tenants don't have to run the water as much with the screens.
