landlord in jail soon - Landlord Forum thread 334023

landlord in jail soon by Anonymous on April 23, 2015 @10:22

This is so embarrassing. Feel free to blast meif you want, but I have to serve a weekend in jail for a criminal traffic charge in the next few weeks. I've learned my lesson believe me!!!

I'm now trying to find someone reliable to take calls from my tenants and call repair service if needed during that weekend. If I can't find someone who wants to do that, what would you do--tell the tenants to call a repair person themselves because I can't be reached?

This is only for a couple of days, but something could still go wrong.

You don't know any capable adult who can handle incoming calls and then call a repair person? Even if you pay them? Wow! Pick anyone from your close circle of friends. Odds are, they won't even get a single call. And don't give out their number to your tenants, just give the friend your phone to receive the calls. Tenants will never know you were gone. And they won't have the friend's phone number to call in the future.

Get an answering machine.

Say,
I will not be available from ___ to ___.
If you have an emergency, please call _______________.

What's the worst thing that can happen? They can always call 911 or call a plumber, etc. And if something takes 3 days to get fixed, you're not going to be in any kind of major trouble for not fixing something for 3 days.

I wouldn't worry about it.

How many units do you have? if it's just a weekend, i wouldn't worry about it too much!Like previously stated, just set up your voicemail!

Sorry to hear about jail. This may be a good opportunity to reflect on people with whom you have lost touch. I suggest invite some folks to a party (with food) when you get out with the hope that some acquaintances may become friends.
