Sect 8 tenant speaks out- How would you respond? - Landlord Forum thread 336922

Sect 8 tenant speaks out- How would you respond? by Annon E. Moose (NY) on July 3, 2015 @22:18

Found this on Craigslist while looking for something else, thought I'd pass it along for your reaction (spelling errors & all):
**Attenion lanlords not accepting Section 8** (Rochester West side)
Hi I wanted to inform some of you lanlords who list your specifications about not accepting Section 8 or DSS..
Do you realize you are discriminating? I am a single mother of 4 children, & not by choice struggling to make ends meet on my own. These assistant programs are specifically for individuals as myself that need temporary help until we can get back on our feet. I was on a 10 yr waiting list to get approved for section 8! This program is not just given out to anyone. It is partial payment & tenants pay the remaining monthly balance. Some of us work, some are on dissability.
This is guranteed income to the lanlord each month & the 1st year on section 8, you are promised a full year lease. Yes there are yearly inspections but who wouldn't want your housing to be approved & accepted to have families safe?
I have been in the same house, renting for 8 years & have a good relationship with my lanlord & haven't missed a payment. My section 8 was processed after I was already in this home for a few years. Unfortunately they are selling now, so we have to move in the next few months.
How many of you can say you had a reliable tenant for more than a few years? I see the same houses for rent on here, sometimes on a yearly basis or even as little as a few months. If you would just accept section 8 or Dss, you can still ween out bad clientele if they have no good references or bad history. Why are you punishing all of us reliable tenants to say 'no way' to these programs? Its completely unfair & very difficult for us to find a comfortable home. We shouldn't be stuck in the city or bad neighborhoods or apartment buildings only just because of rumors these programs are for 'trash'. Everyone is different & some of us take pride in these programs, we work like you, we are very appreciative & take care of homes, no different than a full paying tenant.
Please reconsider & accept these programs, help us out so we can be treated fairly & have a comfortable, safe home to share with our families. Thank you & may God bless you :)

Well...it is not discrimination. Discrimination is illegal. It is perfectly legal for me to refuse Sect 8 and DSS.

I do not doubt that there are some people on those programs that might be good tenants.....but....I had far too many who were not. The many bad eggs ruined the whole thing for me so that I will not take that risk again. Further, the most desirable tenants will not live near Sect 8 or DSS. I cater to only the top tenants (710+ credit scores). Sect 8 and DSS cannot pass that Requirement.

There are many sections of the city that have Sect 8 and DSS. I know they are not the neighborhood you want to live in. I guess that is even more incentive to work your way off those programs as fast as you can. You sound very intelligent and well spoken, I am sure you will have what it takes to move forward from this point. Good luck.

yep ... life is tough. A decision to have four children you can't afford is now society's burden? And 10 years on the government dole? Yep, life is tough but 10 years should be more than enough time to get her act together.

What I don't understand about the government housing (here, we call them "the projects" - I'm guessing originally they were called that back in the 60s) is that m any people live there FOREVER. Why don't these type programs have a time limit? 10 years, per this CL poster, is plenty of time.... not to mention, where are those babies daddy's and their check books?

I had a potential tenant ask me to get registered to take section 8, almost had me convinced until she said she was quitting her job so she could spend more time with her child. But I do not advertise that I will not take it.

I just read that whole thing in Kenny's (South Park) mom's voice. Yup. Read that in Mrs. McCormick's voice. It's so much funnier!
stupid town and state laws by J (FL) on July 4, 2015 @13:30 [ Reply ]
I have heard of some municipalities and states making laws that it is discrimination to say "no section 8" in an ad...what do they hope to accomplish by doing this? No landlord who is not Section 8 approved (and does not want to be) is ever going to get involved with that program.
