Do you think I should offer to cover the cost if I can keep the window unit afterwards?

Clearly seems odd for me to buy *her* a window unit.

IMO do not reduce the rent. If you agree about the brand, BTUs, and price she paid, yes you could keep the unit. This is assuming it is new and under warranty. I would have preferred to make that decision, not her. Did you pay for a hotel for her? No?

Have her give you the brand new condition unit, all the owners manuals and paperwork, original box and packing materials, and a copy of the original receipt so you can register it for warranty. If all is in order, and you agree, you may pay her for the unit. After all it was only used a few days.
