Renting to multiple family members - Landlord Forum thread 339606

Renting to multiple family members by Shannon (Pa) on October 7, 2015 @19:26

Hi,thanks in advance for reading. I don't thane this too often, but I have had it come up a couple times this go around in renting this property.

A lady called Interested in renting and she said it'd be her, her granddaughter and her infant son, possibly someone else (can't remember). It just sounds like she's just trying to give everyone a place to live. Anyway, I've gotten burned when we let a couple rent and also their cousin as well. Both times we did that, something didn't work out with them and it just didn't work out. Also, many landlords only rent to couples or blood relatives. What is your insight with renting to multiple people family and not. Thanks

I've never had any positive experiences renting to a passel of people. (20years/26 properties now). It ends up with different factions mad at each other and no rent being paid.
I'd pass on this one.
Let the big apartment complexes deal with them.

Renting only to 'couples or blood relative' can be regarded as a discriminatory practice by the landlord. A grandmother, a granddaughter and a child comprise a family unit and is also protected by 'Familiar Status' under Fair Housing laws.

"It just sounds like she's just trying to give everyone a place to live" is not a valid reason to deny an applicant to rent, but is reason enough to have a fair housing complaint filed. You should have set standards (written criteria) that each applicant must meet in order to rent from you.
