I have done what you suggest, also. On mailboxes that would take a long time to take off and on, I have wrote a letter to the mail carrier about the place being vacant, and not to deliver any more mail. Then I put it in a 1 ft. sq. zip lock baggie, and duct tape it to the mailbox so the letter can be read, and the box is taped closed.
