No, you do not need an exterminator for ants. Meet your tenant at the home, and bring a can of Raid with you, along with several little ant poison containers. Have her show you where the ant are, and then spray where you need to and put the little poison containers around. Just make sure no kids or pets can get to any of the poisons. Also check to see if she is keeping the place clean and free of food laying around, which is bring in the ants. The ants are looking for food where ever they can find it. That's what brings them in. Eliminate the food source, and the ants will go away.

Carpenter ants are NOT looking for food...they found it..your house

The ants you see are water carriers. They will find water for the colony and bring it back. You cannot kill a carpenter ant colony with raid...it is in the stud and beams of the house itself.

Did the OP determine the species of ant?

I believe they are carpenter ants... found some "Liquid poison Bait Stations" and "Outside Perimeter granuals" that both says are for carpenter ants. I guess they take the poison back to the nest and feed it to the queen.. Really hope that works otherwise I guess I'll be calling Orkin.
