My guess is that the part itself is a cheaply made one from China or some other foreign country. It was broke when the current Ts moved in , and was fixed/replaced then. Now the same part is broken again. Since the shower is going to have to be working properly for any new Ts moving in, if the current Ts will let your handy-person in now, have him/her put on a more expensive part that hopefully will last longer. Don't charge the T for this, as there is no way to prove they it broke from their negligence. This is also a good way to get someone in the place to report back to you on how they are progressing on their move out.

They are using pliers for now until they move out Friday or would you have buy a knob and reimburse them for the expense? I am concerned the pliers may strip something.

Its already broken. Do not recruit them to do repairs if theyre moving out in a week. Either have it repaired temporarily now, or let them use their pliers until Friday.
