how about a conversation along the lines of:

as you know there are always 2 sides to a situation. You've heard one side. You won't hear our side because we don't discuss former tenants or their situations with anyone. BUT, you've rented from us for xx months now and as you can see we've treated you fairly and we've maintained the property. That's because you've been -- good/great/whatever adjective you want to insert -- tenants and we anticipate our relationship to continue as it has been, no matter what did or didn't happen with another family.

your current tenants who are now moving clearly aren't smart enough to think for themselves, or they indeed believe you aren't such a great LL, or they're moving for whatever reason that really has nothing to do with you or your property. fo-getta-bout-it. follow the rules. clean the place up and get a new T in place
