I ran a credit report on a prospective tenant. The report came back "no hit file. Do you know why this could be? I have seen this before on someone that is young. This guy is in his fifties. Thank you

Could be bad name, bad or non-existent social, bad address, etc. Could be a non-citizen from another country. Ask the prospective tenant to verify his info. I assume the credit service charged you for a no hit response? IMO.

Look at the employment and rental history on the application. If he's been in prison (possible reason for the "no hit") there will limited info on the application, or faked rental references. Check the landlord's names against the names on property appraiser. Do the criminal check in the public records.
