I Put RI in the original setup. The state is rhode island. we also did not do a walk thru with the landlord. My husband had the police come do a walk thru with him, and left the key on the counter. We did not want to see her, and did not want her knowing where we were going to live. Not sure how she found us either.

How on earth did you, and why did you, get the police involved. Most police would tell you it is a civil matter and they cannot get involved. Unless RI is a very different case, the police are putting themselves in way of a complaint against them.
If you did not provide a forwarding address, chances are the landlord sent your ending statement to your last known address which would be their property. I just went through this with the tenant I evicted, so I have their ending statement sitting in their file, unopened, in case they try the "I didn't get my ending statement" routine.
As for finding you? Evicted tenants tried that with me too but I still found them. There are ways......all of them legal.
