How often do people file discrimination complaints? Does it cost them money? What would they hope to achieve by filing one?

How often it matters is irrelevant. What's relevant is that as a business owner, you don't want the complaints lodged against you, thereby compromising your business and livelihood.

Not all landlords are scrupulous, and some actively discriminate. By filing a complaint, their hope is that less people will face discrimination when applying for a rental.

For me respectful demeanor is an important criteria. I can't give it up for a one in a million(?) chance someone will file a complaint. Life is short and full of risks. We have to manage our risks with our expected returns..
