Eviction- drive nonpaying tenant out - Landlord Forum thread 352762

Eviction- drive nonpaying tenant out by Amanda (Illinois) on June 8, 2017 @07:17

I am the new owner of a 3 flat in Chicago, which I live in. One of the tenants has not paid rent since I bought the place in April, and we are on month 2 of the eviction process. I foresee this taking a long time. Is there anything legal I can do to essentially make this guy's life in my building less desirable? I'm thinking about playing music in the basement all day (he's on floor 1) or installing security cameras. Any suggestions would be great. I'm living in the building so it is that much more infuriating to see a non paying tenant all the time.

It is people like you who give us landlords a bad image. What you contemplate is wrong and illegal.

Are you using an attorney to do the eviction? If this is your first time, it is best to get an experienced eviction attorney because that will reduce the time and money by avoiding mistakes. Take some time to watch a few of the eviction cases down at the courthouse too. That will give you some idea of what kinds of things the judge wants to know and what kinds of excuses work or don't work for tenants in that courtroom. Don't even discuss the eviction with the tenant other than to refer any offers/arguements/discussion to your lawyer.

Let legal proceedings play out. Cut your losses. To do what you are suggested is illegal and not worth the effort in the long run if you get sued for doing such. Don't do it.
