You may leave at any time you wish. What you are dealing with is an uneducated landlord. You should at the minimum keep the utilities on to prevent any damages from occurring.

As long as the rent is paid, the rental is still yours whether you live there or not. If the landlord enters and takes possession, that's an illegal eviction and you are entitled to damages and return of any prepaid rent. Otherwise, you have some weird landlord who does not know their responsibilities being a landlord. What state are you in, as some states require less notice if you are a month to month?
