credit check without a SS number? - Landlord Forum thread 355065

credit check without a SS number? by Lynne (Ohio) on November 13, 2017 @17:18

We're getting applications for a rental from hardworking people whose have a positive current rental verification but who do not have SS numbers. One family the husband has his own landscaping business and the wife works for a catering company. They do have ITIN numbers for filing taxes, but I don't know what to think. I have not bothered doing any employment verfications yet on these type of applicants since they don't meet our basic requirements of having a favorable credit history (can't check credit history without a social security number).

We can wait for tenants who do meet our criteria but I wondered if any of you have suggestions on how to check backgrounds if a person does not have a social security card.

Request a copy of their 2016 tax return. If they really want to rent your property, they will give it to you. No SS# or tax return??-----pass them by.

They have made your screening process easy for you. Move on. Consider it a sign.

Just tell them....yes, you do have a social security number. Everyone who is legal in this country has one. Everyone.

They are hiding this from you??? Beware!

Just tell them you cannot process their application without that info. Done.

I had a fellow once refuse to give me his social security number, saying that it was a breach of his personal security to give it out...privacy and all that.
I told him, not doing a credit check on any application of a breach of my personal security...financial security, and all that
