It help identify all your other information you provide. Shows you are legally in the USA. Usually needed to do credit checks on a renter.
If you as a LL don't want to qualify your tenant that's all up to you. It is not necessary if you want to do business on a hand shake bases. But after you get burnt a few times. You will get anything and everything to identify a possible tenant, and their past history.
