Nolo press has helpful books so that next time you can avoid having to pay triple damages for improperly returning the security deposit. Focus on that, rather then one day or rent.

Thank you for your reply. I am not focusing on the one day rent. I just asked what day is legal. FYI - letter was sent to T within a few days of T vacating the apartment but T claims T never received it. Hence, the triple security she feels she is she entitled even though letter was sent and she did caused over $4,000 in damages.

    Have you asked your attorney for help on this? I find that having an eviction attorney available often means that small questions can get answered with a short no-charge phone call or with a letter that has a $100 charge -- and that's at California rates! The issue is that you did not protect yourself against the triple damage claim. An attorney will have experience in doing this.
