California law of returning the security deposit - Landlord Forum thread 359766

California law of returning the security deposit by Christine on October 1, 2019 @22:11

Hello:

California law allows a landlord 21 days to return the deposit to tenants after they move out. I would like to know if 21 calendar day is counted based on the date of certified mail by a post office or the check must in tenants'hands on the 21th day.

Best

Smith

My custom has been to mail it out by the 21 of the month. As long as there is proof that it was out of your hands by the 21. This also includes Email. if the tenant is getting -0- then the email should be sent by the 21 day- of course this email should list any deductions.

Day 22 is not day 21.
