Rodent/mice problem in my townhouse - Landlord Forum thread 360969

Rodent/mice problem in my townhouse by sue on November 27, 2020 @21:24

This is an attached two story townhouse. My unit is between two units. No basement.
I never had any rodent/mice problem in the past.

This year with the cold weather for last few weeks, tenants are complaining about redolent/mice that are coming into the house. So far, they see droppings only in the laundry room/utility room where I have a narrow loft backing out to the area between space under 2nd floor staircases on one side and a shared wall with the next door townhouse on the other side.
This laundry room is right by the front door/foyer and right across the powder room. I always thought that rodents will come thru kitchen or move towards the kitchen in search of food. In this case, my kitchen is in the back of the house, the opposite end of the front door. Don’t see any dropping in the kitchen so far.

Tried Home depot traps/bates and caught two rodents. But more are coming. Cant find any holes/opening in the surrounding of the house to eliminate the root cause of the problem.
What am I missing? How to find any external hole/opening and solving this problem once for all?
please help.
Thanks friends.

The configuration of your (or any) building, has no bearing on your mouse problem. Mice are searching for just 3 things-----food, warmth, and a safe place to have babies. They will get in wherever they can.

Once in, they can come and go whenever they please, until it gets too cold outside. Then they will look for anything they can find inside for food. You may never find their opening to the outside. So just keep putting out poison and traps, and usually within 30 days you should see no more mouse droppings.

Is the best trap that I've ever used. You do have to check it daily because it can fill up quickly and in hot weather...well, it's not something you forget.

A mouse can get in thru an opening as small as a pencil eraser. If you have potted plants, set snap traps there because it's a cozy mouse condo, giving them across to your house if you leave the door open AT ALL.

Garry and Kathy,
Thanks much for the info. So helpful!!

We did find two holes in the laundry room, closing them up with copper mesh.
Thanks much
