Also, check whether the storage unit may require a security deposit and monthly payments. However, there are also some storage units which do not require any security deposit.

This is all good advice. Theft insurance is a biggee - so is the security aspect of the unit/facility itself. I don't personally feel that climate control is necessary in most cases, though that may depend on the geography. I think using a container of some sort inside of the unit is a good move.
