90% of self storage facilities offer insurance, which will cover theft, fire, and natural disaster; but you should ask whether theft insurance is included. You may also want to inquire about how they protect your items while they’re in storage. In addition to storing your belongings securely, you may also want to consider storing them in a storage unit that has climate control. This feature may help protect your belongings in the event of an accidental power outage, as well as protect them from extreme heat and cold. If you decide to store your belongings with a company that doesn’t have climate control, then you will also want to consider storing items in plastic bins. As you are well aware, temperature fluctuations can cause damage to a variety of household items. To prevent potential damage to your items, it may be a good idea to store them in some sort of plastic container.

Although it is safe to use a storage unit, you should consider a few things before choosing the right one.
    1. Hire a storage unit based on your budget and needs. Don't rent a unit that is too large or small for your needs.
    2. Consider the location of the storage and the frequency of your visits. If you wish to store personal belongings such as photo albums, furniture or clothes, you should find a storage unit that is nearby or at least not far away from your home. If you plan to rent storage for business belongings, you should not wait until the last minute to find storage.
    3. Also, check whether the storage unit may require a security deposit and monthly payments. However, there are also some storage units which do not require any security deposit.

This is all good advice. Theft insurance is a biggee - so is the security aspect of the unit/facility itself. I don't personally feel that climate control is necessary in most cases, though that may depend on the geography. I think using a container of some sort inside of the unit is a good move. I found this article from that has some more tips and things to consider when looking for a storage unit: https://threemovers.com/how-to-choose-a-storage-unit/
