New appliances no longer have an expected life span of 15-30 years. The average for well cared for appliances is likely 10 years, 15 at the outside. Even the manufacturers are saying 12 years for the new refrigerators because the refrigerant is hard on the compressors. Has a lot to do with electronic controls and less durable parts.

If people would stop buying the cheapest thing on the shelf they would last longer. Quality cost money. I never advise anyone to purchase high end appliances with that are overloaded with expensive electronic controls.
I recommend good, durable mid price range. They are not loaded up with electronic controls with frivolous choices like six water level and a like number for clothes. Clothes are either wash and wear or they are not, levels of water need to be either high or low with only hot, warm and cold water.

I speak of good middle of the road appliances. The less expensive will be 3-10 years with good care.
