Gas man - Landlord Forum thread 317483

Gas man by Eric on April 14, 2014 @16:05

Gas company recently put in new meters at my property. After installing the meters when he went to relight the pilots he was unable to find the hot water heater and the gravity furnace was termed "unaccessible". Does this sound like a familiar problem who has been thru this before. I believe there may be access to a crawl space but can not find the door. Any advice on finding the door or hot water heater would be appreciated.

perhaps I don't understand ...

you own a building but have never seen the hot water heater nor the furnace? you have never seen where to access these? You think us on the internet can tell you to look in the left hand corner at the back of the building, rather than the right hand corner?

Again ... perhaps I don't understand ...

I agree with Nicole------I don't understand your post either. You're a LL, and you OWN a building, that YOU don't know where the furnace or water heater is ??? If I were you, I would be at the property at 7:00 tomorrow morning, and FIND THEM !!! Take someone with you, to help you find your PROPERTY first !

I'd begin by walking around the building to identify where this equipment is vented out of the building. If they are gas they have to have vents. That will tell you where to begin your hunt!

Really? I can't believe someone is asking this! Or that I took the time to answer with a suggestion. Troll pulling our legs?

The gas company I deal with will only turn gas on to the house, and possibly light the easiest pilot light. The landlord is responsible for lighting the rest of the pilots. This is because they blew a house off its foundation, and damaged the house next to it by leaving the gas stove leaking gas into a closed house all day. The guy came home, smelled gas, shut the door, and went next door to the neighbors to call the gas company. Before he got through to the gas company, the house blew up, part of it came off the foundation , and debris damaged siding on the other neighbor's house. Until this happened, they would light all the pilots for my rental properties. The gas company employee made a huge mistake that day. Now the rule is they have to have someone home, of legal age, in order to turn the service on.
