My shower alternates scalding hot/cold randomly

I live in an older building and my shower water temp. behaves unpredictable. I am guessing it has to do with the old pipes ? It seems to do this any time of day, so independent of when other people in building are taking showers.
Is this something I should expect my landlord to fix? Or just deal with it. I am guessing the solution is complex...

Sounds as if multiple units are being serviced by only one water heater. If anyone flushes their toliet it steals all the cold water and causes the water to be scalding hot. If someone is washing dishes in their dishwasher kiss your hot water goodbye.
Old pipes have nothing to do with it, it's simply supply and what equipment is giving you the hot water.
How long have you been dealing with this?

I agree with B on this. And the only remedy is to put in a lot bigger water heater ; 1 for each unit ; or 2-3 of them hooked up together----say 3, 50 gal ones to make 150 gals.total. (yes, it can be done, because I did it 20 years ago in a 4-plex.)

Go to a professional plumbing supply house. Get a temp.control/flow control shower head assembly. It can be set for temp. Don't bother with the stuff at Home Depot and Lowes..it does really work. But...expect to pay several hundred dollars for it. Plan to take it with you when you move...so keep the old shower head/assembly intact

hi im an landlord and and I do a lot work on my own properties and I had this issue come up few times most the time it is the old pipes I just cut one sec out to check see if my hole is to small so if hole is to small ur cold or hot water will change and its not big issue just replace the bad pipes no need to re pipe the building just ur bad spots and this is something landlords have to fix you can request it if does not do it but the rent in escrow until issue is fix :)
