Have the stump ground. Eventually the roots will die. Stump grinding is not real costly. I paid 80 to have three medium stumps taken out. The two stumps in the front were ground down far enough that I was able to grow grass over them by before summer was over.
It the roots are really bad, have you considered digging them out? Or raising the dirt level over them?

The stump grinder can grind the roots in the process of removing the stump.

    I didn't know that. Many big roots would be costly to pay to dig out.
