Here's the link: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/23/BAUH18CIJG.DTL&tsp=1

Guess I'll be sure to pass over that single mother with two kids for my flat downstairs. And, I'd rather keep the place empty than rent to blue collar folks who may limit the amount of rent I can charge just by their choice of profession.

Ugh.

thank God I am not a LL in SF. What happens if LL loses their residence for whatever reason (economic, fire, death) and have no other choice but to move into one of their rental units? I love how everyone thinks that LL's are RICH and can afford to comply with whatever is legislated under any circumstances whatsoever. The local governments have more control over YOUR PROPERTY than you do. Stinks

From the article

But the most controversial proposal, also authored by Daly, bars landlords from increasing rent to more than one-third of a tenant's income. Daly tried to curb opposition by introducing an amendment Tuesday that limited who is eligible for the so-called tenant hardship provision to people who are unemployed, those whose wages have fallen by 20 percent or more over the past year, or those whose sole income is from government assistance.

WHAT!!!!!!!!

Easy and fun to spend other peoples money to make yourself look good.

Easy to set in a private office with pen in hand drafting ever more regulation to control others and spin the benefits.

As a LL, I welcome all these unconstitutional measures; perhaps LL's will once again be pressed to file a lawsuit challanging Rent Control Laws again.

Couldn't you get an initiative on the ballot, eliminating rent control laws statewide? In the communist state of Massachusetts They managed to pass a similar law, more than 10 years ago, by a resounding margin. Granted that the politicians have been nibbling away at it ever since.
I found that news very gratifying that the average citizen of that state felt individual property rights were more important than the possibilty of getting over on a percieved bad guy ( us LL's), by government fiat .
Here in NY they would have to have a constitutional convention to give us Initiative and Referendum, and they won't do it because it is very evident that we could more effectively govern the state than our legislative body can.

Meanwhile the GOP has screwed the country over, 10% of people are out of work, young men are dying daily in the middle east for Cheney and Rummy, yet you whine like a kid because rent control has come in to stablize the local rental market? Let me call you a whaaaambulance.
