James a question. Do you need a judgment from small claims court to put a balance on someone's credit report?

Yes -- typically LLs don't have access to report bad debtors to the credit reporting bureaus, but if you get a judgment and it is properly filed in the court records and in the county records (in our case, it's the land records office), then the judgment will be pulled for inclusion by the credit bureau.

There are numerous online collection agencies that will place the information in their credit file as a collection item. There are flat rate companies who do this and the fee is small. About $25 or less. I have done it.
