If you signed a lease then your landlord has no right to remove you from the premises just because he wanted to occupy the apartment. If he evicted you through the courts, and judgment passed in favor of the landlord then there is nothing you can do.

If it was a month to month lease (whether verbal or written), he would just have to notify you within 30 days for you to move.

Some states do, in fact, allows just this -- a lease may be terminated to allow an owner to occupy the property. Is your response based on NJ state law? Just curious.
