This is a new trick they are doing in SF. One person fills out the lease papers and someone else moves in. Then they will fight you tooth and nail with free tenant services.

So long as the T doesn't know the unit is illegal you are OK. What do you bet they know it's an illegal unit.

Also NEVER EVER conduct a real estate transaction that isn't written. That is why you can buy a lease here or even a free one from elsewhere is better than nothing. Use it next time.

Be sure to evict the person with whom you originally agreed and John and Jane Doe 1 thru 10.

It is usually worth hiring an attorney. The lesson learned is usually cheaper than losing in court.
