I think people should pay their bills. You and your landlord. Defaulting on a rental property has greater consequences than a home you live in. Either way your landlord owns the home until which point the bank takes possesion of it. The deed may not be free and clear but the landlord does own the home, currently.
Best route for you is to go find another place to live, now. Or keep paying the rent, discounted, until the bank tells you to move. You are looking for a free ride and that really is not okay. If your next landlord is smart they will call this landlord and find out what you did.
