what happens if she doesn't get her child support check? If someone is employed and loses their job, they can run out and get something else - maybe not a great job but there are jobs if people really want them. People losing a job also are eligible for unemployment most times so there is a buffer time frame. with children, she probably isn't going to be able to run and get a job right away as she'll be in turmoil and also have child care to think about.

I also dislike renting - in my mind - to people who are home all day long - seems they find all sorts of little stuff to pick about.
