More and more of the best apartments in Dallas, as well as properties located all across Texas, are requiring "pet interviews" rather than blacklisting entire breeds of dogs. This is a much more reliable way to screen out aggressive animals. After all, a chihuahua can be a biter and be aggressive, whereas Great Danes don't have the nickname "Gentle Giant" for nothing. They are an extremely calm and gentle dog. By interviewing the dog the leasing staff can get a better sense of his/her friendliness towards strangers.

This, combined with a recommendation from a Vet, will help screen out most problem pets. If an animal is aggressive, the Vet would know it. Have you ever tried to give a shot or look inside the ear of an aggressive animal? Lol. That Vet will not give a letter of recommendation for an animal he knows is aggressive.

This website has an interesting article talking about renters who are looking for apartments, and the challenges they face when they have a unique pet situation (such as owning a restricted dog breed, or owning more than 2 pets), and the best way to address these problems:
